A windy and cold at times, Alexander Stadium, was host to the English Schools Championships. Twenty of our young athletes were selected to represent their counties and it was a very successful championships.
This is the top event for our young athletes and the competition to fierce. There were many great performances with four medals and numerous finalists, some just missing out on a medal.
Jessica Duncton took gold in the senior girls100m hurdles, to continue her excellent season. Two silver medals were won by Charley O'Neill in the senior girls pole vault and Isabella Davies in the junior girls 300m. This was Isabella's first time at English Schools and she is in the bottom of the age group so this was an excellent performance.
Our final medalist was Jai Sohna, who after sustaining an injury after his first race of the season and missing five weeks of training, put in an exceptional performance to take bronze in the inter boys 800m.
Just missing out on a medal was Thomas Bristol in the inter boys 100m as he finished fourth in the final. In a highly congested 3000m, with 27 in the race, Ash Burgess finished a creditabe 13th despite several spike injuries and a running with a shoe half on for a good part of the race. Precious Akpe-Moses was 5th in the senior girls 200m with Grace Wirght 7th in the same event.
Other athletes performed well and did themselves proud. Dan Wood, who had high hopes of doing well just tightened up in the last few metres of his heat which resulted in a heavy fall and he would have made the final if this hadn't happenned.
