The final of the 400m was one which the Birmingham crowd had been looking forward to as local athlete, Matthew Hudson-Smith, was vying for the gold medal.
After his successful campaign at the World Championships Matt was looking to top the podium on his home track. However, it was not meant to be. Coming off the final bend he had the lead and looked as though he was going to fulfill his dream but finishing fast in lane eight Samukonga from Zambia just overtook him with centimetres to spare.
Reflecting on the result Matt was philosophical and praised his new set up which has seen him take two medals already this summer. Next up is the European Championships which start in Munich mext week and we all hope he will on top of the podium this time.
